Visit dentist and get HIV

Berita sedih dan menyakitkan hari dr The Sun hari ini 10/11/2010.

Woman believed to have contracted HIV from dentist visit. A 20-YEAR-OLD virgin who does not do drugs and has not had any blood transfusion but has tested HIV-positive, is believed to have contracted the virus during a visit to the dentist. According to Sin Chew Daily yesterday, the woman, a Malaysian working in Singapore, tested positive last month when she went for health screening before renewing her work permit.

She broke down on the spot when told of the test result.“Her whole world was shattered (by the news),” said a relative of hers. The woman is now back in Malaysia after a second test confirmed she is HIV-positive.

The report said because it was a rare case, the doctor who examined the woman discussed it with his colleagues and was surprised to learn that a similar case was detected in August. The patient was a
Malaysian man in his 20s. There are some striking similarities in the two cases. Both patients have no sex experience, no blood transfusion and are not into drugs, but have visited dentists in Malaysia recently for tooth extraction.

“The doctor told us that if the instruments used by dentists are not cleaned thoroughly and sterilised, HIV can be spread from one patient to the next,” said the woman’s relative.

It is learnt that the two cases had been referred to the Singapore Health Ministry. Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has shown deep concern about the two cases. He said the ministry will take appropriate measures to handle them.

The Malaysian AIDS Council said although AIDS virus can be spread during dental treatment if strict
standard of infection control is not followed by a dentist, the chances are very small, and the public
should have no fear of going to the dentist.

Simpati betul aku mereka yg kena HIV/AIDS atas sebab kecuaian orang lain. Dlm npaper smlm ada sorang bdk Melayu umur 14 thn dijangkiti HIV masa umur dia 3 thn. Pihak hospital buat penukaran darah masa dia kena sakit kuning without kebenaran parents dia. Tapi kalau parents dia benarkan dan darah tu berpenyakit sama jugak jalannya kan? Dulu ada jugak srg pmpuan Melayu yg dah berumur skt mengalami kisah yg sama. Staf yg buat tu setakat kena transfer je. Patutnya boh darah tu dlm badan dia, ramai yg terlibat tu- tp aku rasa yg lebih bersalah org yg sambil lewa test darah, org yg melabel darah (kalau2 dia cuai), org yg sign luluskan darah. Takkan nak salahkan pengarah hospital kot...cuba ko tgk carta kat hsptl tu berapa lapisan pekerja baru despatch blh sampai ke pengarah?

  1. PRESS RELEASE BY
THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF HEALTH MALAYSIA
Y BHG TAN SRI DATO’ SERI DR HJ MOHD ISMAIL MERICAN
TO THE EDITOR OF ‘THE SUN’
    11 November 2010

We refer to the article in ‘The Sun’ dated 10 November 2010 entitled ‘Woman believed to have contracted HIV from dentist visit’.

The Ministry of Health Malaysia and the Malaysian Dental Council view the incidents reported in the article with great concern. I would like to re-assure members of the public that stringent adherence to standards of infection control protects both patients and healthcare providers from possible HIV infection in both medical and dental practices. We draw attention and fully agree with the statement from the Malaysian AIDS Council that the possibility of HIV infection through dental treatment is very small if a strict standard of infection control is followed.

The Malaysian Dental Council publishes and circulates two documents - Guidelines on Infection Control in Dental Practice (1996, revised 2nd Edition 2007) and Guidelines for Oral Healthcare Practitioners Infected with Blood-borne Viruses (2007) - to all dental practitioners registered with the Malaysian Dental Council to ensure adherence to standards of infection control.

Strong adherence to infection control guidelines is mandatory for all dental practitioners in public and private sectors. All government dental clinics observe strict compliance to the infection control guidelines, in which standard precautions are strictly followed for all blood and body fluids, excretions and secretions, whether or not contaminated with blood. This ensures safe dental practice to protect both the patient and the dental practitioner and healthcare personnel.

Under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998 (Act 586), Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Regulation 2006 and the Code of Professional Conduct, all private sector dental practitioners are also bound to comply with these guidelines. All private dental clinics have been inspected by 2009 under the first registration exercise of private dental facilities which began in 2008. These clinics are subject to periodic inspection under Act 586 as part of continuing monitoring on quality of care.

I once again reassure members of the public that the possibility of HIV infection through dental treatment is very small with strict standards of infection control. The Ministry of Health Malaysia is investigating the cases mentioned and will take the necessary action on the matter.
